Thinking about IVF

It is proven that 1 in 8 women have difficulties in conceiving and that IVF (in vitro fertilization) is the most effective method. There are many factors that should be taken into consideration when deciding upon where to have IVF treatment. Couples should carry out detailed research regarding which clinic and which specialist as well as looking at success rates and experience.

Why Cyprus is a Popular Destination for IVF Treatment?

In Cyprus, clinics offer a variety of treatment to ensure the success of IVF treatment. These are; egg donation, sperm donation, embryo donation, preimplantation genetic diagnoses (PGT), micro TESA/TESE, and microinjection to name but a few. Alongside these procedures, Cyprus IVF clinics offer high quality standards, experienced physicians, specialised staff and laboratories that match European standards. Patients from all over the world especially Turkey and Europe choose Cyprus for these reasons. From a finacial perspective having IVF treatment in Cyprus is ideal. Treatment prices are advantageous compared to other countries.

What should be considered when choosing IVF centre?

Prior to starting treatment, there are number of factors that should be considered such as, the IVF centre should have a permit from the relevant Ministry of Health showing that IVF treatment can be applied. The physician who will apply IVF treatment should have experience. Equally as important is the experience of the embryologists as they can affect the success. Questioning the success rate of the clinic can give you an impression of their experience. Quality certificates should also be questioned. Before choosing a clinic, online research is a must.
One of the key factors that affects the success rate of a clinic is the quality of the embryology laboratory. Having state-of-art Technologies and the most recent equipment have an impact on the success of the treatment.
You should also try to find out how long a clinic has been operating for and how many families they have helped to achieve their dreams.

What to consider whilst preparing for IVF treatment?

In the process of preparation for IVF treatment, there are some factors that both mother and father should pay attention to.
First of all you should be prepared psychologically and take measures to improve the quality of your life early on.

Healthy nutrition is one of the main factors affecting the success of IVF treatment. Today, many recent publications show that a change in dietary habits before fertilization can positively affect the outcome of IVF treatment. (Braga et al., 2015; Firns et al., 2015; Hornstein, 2016; Garruti et al., 2017; Machtinger et al., 2017). In a recent study published in “Human Reproduction” magazine, it was reported that women who received IVF treatment at normal weight (non-obese) and were under 35 years of age had more favorable IVF results by following the Mediterranean diet. Since healthy nutrition is also important in sperm quality, men can also follow the Mediterranean diet to support their spouse and increase sperm quality.

The effect of quality sleep on the release of reproductive hormones has long been known. In an article published in the journal “Fertility and Sterility” in 2013, it is recommended that expectant mothers sleep for 7.5-8 hours per day during IVF treament. The Melatonin hormone, which has an effect on the sleep and reproductive system, reaches its highest values at 21:00 and midnight, and it is recommended that patients and pregnant women should sleep early.

Avoiding chemicals is also important for the success of IVF treatment. The American Endocrine Society has declared that many chemicals have negative effects on endocrine. It is recommended that some chemicals should be avoided not only during IVF and pregnancy, but throughout life. Formaldehyde, paraben, triclosan, BPA and other phenols are among the most important chemicals to be avoided.

What should be considered during IVF treatment?

The things that IVF patients should pay attention vary according to the stages of treatment. It is necessary to summarize the IVF treatment in 7 stages and pay attention to the main issues at each stage. Here are the stages of IVF treatment and the things to be considered.

• Preparation Stage: After the decision to have IVF treatment, a consultation takes place with the doctor, they can learn your background and medical history. After the consultation your routine tests are carried out and your protocol can then be prepared. Examples of drugs that prepare the female body for ovulation induction or release of eggs from the ovaries include the oral contraceptive pill and injectable hormones,
Inform your doctor about any medications and supplements you may be using during the IVF preparation process.

2. Egg induction: Obtaining a large number of healthy egg cells is important for the success of IVF treatment. During ovulation induction, the woman’s hormone levels should be measured regularly, and ultrasound imaging and blood tests should be performed. Ovulation; The timing of this injection is very important as it occurs approximately 40 hours after the injection of hCG hormone, which triggers the release of developing and maturing eggs.

3. Egg Collection: Since this procedure requires surgical treatment, the patient is given sedative drugs to avoid pain. A needle is inserted into the vagaina and the eggs collected, they are then sent to the laboratory and inseminated with sperm. The whole procedure takes about 15 minutes and the patient is kept under observation until the effect of anesthesia has passed. If for any reason the eggs cannot be collected then egg donation should be considered

4. Sperm Collection: On the same day a sperm sample should be given by the man, if sperm cannot be obtained naturally then biopsy procedures such as micro TESE or TESA may be required. It is important to apply sexual abstinence prior to sperm collection. In other words, no sexual activity should take place for 3 days before the sperm sample is given. Otherwise, a sufficient number of sperm may not be obtained.

5. Fertilization: Fertilization can be carried out in two ways. The first is the placement of egg and sperm samples into a tube for fertilization, however sometimes the fertilisation ability of the sperm cells is not enough. When such a situation is encountered, a microinjection (ICSI) procedure is performed by injecting sperm cells into each egg cell. When the sperm enters the egg, fertilization will begin within a few hours. Fertilized cells grow by dividing into 8 cells within 3 days and 100 cells within 5-6 days. Embryos, which are observed to develop sufficiently, are prepared for transfer. The aCGH procedure can also be used to determine the health status of embryos more precisely.

6. Embryo Transfer: This process takes place within 2-7 days of egg collection. The procedure is painless, so no anesthesia is applied. With the help of an ultrasound guided catheter, the embryos are released and the procedure is completed. After embryo transfer, the expectant mother should rest for 3 days. A shower can be taken after transfer. Swimming is not recommended because of the risk of infection. Heavy sports should be avoided along with smoking and alcohol. It is also important to avoid the lifting of heavy objects as well as any paints and liquids that may contain lead. There should be no sexual intercourse for two weeks. Unpasteurized milk and fresh cheese should not be consumed as it may cause listeria infections. In addition, progesterone medications and other medications recommended by the doctor should be taken regularly.

7. Pregnancy Test: A blood pregnancy test can be performed on the 12th day after the transfer.
Apart from the issues mentioned above, your doctor will give you the necessary directions according to your general health condition. Strict adherence to your doctor’s instructions is crucial to the success of IVF treatment.
